Cultural visits to Tarragona

Visiting Tarragona is like jumping to the past to know the heritage of the Ancient Tarraco, where the remains of its monumental character still persist. It was recognized as World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

We encourage you to visit the impressive archaeological complex in the historic old town, la Part Alta, to take a walk among the millenary walls, to discover its Provincial Forum hidden among the narrow streets; and enjoy the impressive enclosures for shows.

The city has also other appeals, just like its Medieval past profiting its imperial heritage, its Modernist buildings, without forgetting the well known promenade: La Rambla, with its impressive Balcó del Mediterrani.

So, we propose you different itineraries around the city:

Imperial Tarragona (a visit of ½ a day)

Tarraco was the capital of the largest province of the Roman Empire, so large enclosures were constructed to express the power of Rome and today we still can find them. The visit starts with the view of a big mock up of Tarraco in its biggest splendour to better appreciate the monumental character of the city. We will continue along the Walls, the most ancient Roman work out of Italy, that encircle the old town. Afterwards, we will take a walk through the remains of the Forum-Circus, spaces communicated by the Praetorian Tower, where we can see the grandstands of the possibly best preserved Roman Circus in Europe. The visit ends besides the sea, a place where we find the Roman amphitheatre, enclosure where gladiators fights are represented.

Medieval Tarragona (a visit of ½ a day)

Tarragona preserves important monuments of its medieval past, many of which are the heritage of its Roman past. This is why we will start our visit in the mock up of Tarraco, where we will see the foundations of the medieval city. The most remarkable building is the Cathedral, recently restored and city centre of that period. We will take a walk through the main streets of the old town to know other spots just like Santa Tecla’s hospital, the Jewish Quarter, the King’s Castle or the Medieval Walls; we will finish the visit besides the see in Santa Maria del Miracle, constructed on the Roman amphitheatre.

Tarragona Express (a visit of ½ a day)

The first part of the visit consists of a tour of the city where we can see the seafront with its crystal clear beaches, the harbor and the quarter known as El Serrallo. Then we continue our itinerary walking into the historic center of the city, La Part Alta where we will see its Roman walls, a great model of Tàrraco (name of the Roman city) and walk through the noblest city street to reach La Catedral, the largest medieval building in the city. We will continue through the streets of the old town to the Provincial Forum, La Torre del Pretorio and the Roman circus. We will see La Plaza de la Font, a charming square that holds a secret from the past and where we can find Tarragona City Hall. We'll finish our tour by the sea, with views of the Roman Amphitheater from El balcó del Mediterrani with its privileged views.

Eternal Tarragona (a full day visit)

Along this tour, we will do a general visit to Tarragona from its past to the present to appreciate its transformation through more than 2000 years of history. The first part of the tour will take place in the old town, known as “Part Alta”, where the Roman past and the middle Ages are mixed. We will walk through the Archaeological Promenade, the Cathedral, the Provincial Forum, the Praetorian Tower, the Circus and the Roman amphitheatre. The second part of the tour consists of a panoramic visit of the city, where we can see the maritime promenade, its beaches, the seaport and its fishermen neighbourhood. We will go to the Roman Aqueduct of Ferreres, which provided water to the city until the middle Ages. We will come back to the city centre to take the last walk through the entertainment areas, like La Plaça de la Font and Les Rambles, to finish in the viewpoint in the Balcó del Mediterrani.
