Girona
Girona is considered one of the most beautiful cities in the peninsula, not only by its monuments, but also by its gardens that give a touch of romance. A harmonious city, where the old stones coexist with the vitality of its people, considered the best place to live for many people.
Four rivers cross the City: Ter, Güell, Galligants and Onyar, The old town stands between the last two, which is the historic centre of the city. You can only enter the oldest part of Girona through different bridges, which welcome the visitors in very colourful scenery. Behind this colour screen, the reference of the historic city, the Cathedral, raised in one of the most special places, el Call Jueu, the ancient Jewish quarter—with medieval origin—easily recognizable by its characteristic passageways, creating an attractive paving labyrinth, besides the medieval trade quarters leading into the modern area of La Rambla.
We propose you different itineraries to visit the city:
The visit starts in Sant Felix Bridge, where we can observe one of the most known postcards: the houses on the river Onyar and the Basilica of Sant Felix welcoming us. After crossing the bridge, we find a symbol of the city, the lioness; according to the tradition, it’s necessary to kiss it to come back to the city. Before entering the old city, we will visit the Galligants district, with the Sant Pere monastery, Sant Nicolau chapel and the Arabian baths; all of them are Romance buildings. The first work we find is the impressive staircase that leads us to the Cathedral, with the widest Gothic nave in the world. Next to it, we will take a walk by el Call Jueu, the Jewish Quarter, characteristic by its passageways leading into the newest part of the city: La Plaça del Vi and Les Rambles, where we will finish our visit next to the river again.
The visit to Girona can be enlarged on a full day visit by going to see Besalu, a picturesque town, characteristic by its medieval past, very present in its streets and with an impressive bridge welcoming the visitors.
Another option is visiting the Theatre-Museum of Dali, in Figueres, to change the tune and jump to the contemporary art in this museum placed in an old theatre; the whole complex is a whole surrealist work art of this outlandish artist.
