Lleida, culture, history and Segre

Lleida has been historically the inner capital of Catalonia. Its location made it the west entrance and exit of the country. This strategic location made the city live large periods of splendor for centuries that is reflected in its monumental past. One can also appreciate the remains caused by warfare in the city that resulted in extensive damage and significant changes.

The tour starts in the Seu Vella, the old cathedral which is the main architectural monument of the city. It tower stands on a hill that bears his name, from which you can see the best view of the city, the Segre river and much of the fields of Lleida. The Monumental site is completed by the Castle of the king and the military fortification that surrounds the whole complex.

If you descend towards the center, the first stop is at the church of San Llorenç, medieval temple of great esteem by the people of Lleida. Arrive at Commercial axis, which follows the route of the Camino de Santiago, which is one of the main roads of the city. On these streets you will find the major buildings in the city either ancient or modern:

La Seu Nova built in the eighteenth century to replace the old one that had become military barracks.

St. Mary's Hospital, gothic building that housed the needy and pilgrims.

The Peu del Romeu chapel dedicated to Santiago and the stands on the ancient pilgrimage route of the pilgrimage route.

The Paeria Palace, the name is called the Town City of Lleida, located in an old palace of the thirteenth century where were and are the offices the current town hall as prisons that even today you can visit.

The Diputació Palace, headquarters of the province, structures built reusing old hospice of the city and where striking formidable balcony, called the work of forging Serraller balcony. Just opposite the house Sauces, one of the most picturesque buildings in the city.

The commercial and historic axis is parallel to the river Segre, one of the main elements that gives personality to the city. Just across the river there are the Champs Elysees, inspired by the famous French park divided into areas of French-style gardens and romantic English, built on the basis of forest land and housing buildings end XIXth century and early XXth century.
